I am reinstalling the OS on the PC which is connected to my Epson R1800. Now I want to check the printer (check pattern) without using the software, is that possible?

Turn the printer off, then disconnect your USB or Firewire cable.
Make sure there is normal paper (a4 or letter-size) in the paper-tray. Then hold the "load paper" button while turning the printer on.
Keep the "load paper" button pressed untill the printer starts loading.
