Learning Spanish Through Online Mexican Radio
My husband is from Mexico. His English is good enough that I can understand him and we can communicate, but I wanted to help him learn a bit more. One day, I came home and turned the radio on to find that he had changed my american station to a mexican ranchero radio station. At first I was upset, but the music was nice so I left it on. One song in particular was really lovely and I asked my husband to translate the song for me. It took him a while, but with the help of a dictionary, he was able to do so. The next time I heard the song, I knew what it meant, and so did he, in both languages.
I had finally found a way to teach myself spanish. Every day my online radio was tuned to radio ranchito. It would be on all the time. The mexican music was now a part of my every day life.
Today, I am fluent in spanish. My husband sometimes comes to me to ask me how to say certain words because his english is so good, he has forgotten his spanish!
Canadian Culture is the Best

As I learned later on a show on my local radio station, that’s in Quebec, which used to be a colony of France back in the day. It’s unbelievable that there are people in Quebec that don’t speak English very well.
Then there’s the difference in music. On the western coast, they listen to classic rock like The Eagles; on the eastern coast, they prefer French live hip hop; and in the middle, in places like Winnipeg, Manitoba, they listen to country music radio stations like QX 104 FM that play artists such as Shane Yellowbird, Lee Ann Womack, and Keith Urban. I never thought they would like country music artists in Canada, I imagine the live concerts must be fun!
